Cocktails Inspired by Bluewater Vodka

John Lundin is the founder of the up and coming Bluewater Organic Vodka. While Bluewater is distilled in the mountains of Colorado, John calls Seattle home, is a lifelong sailor (hence the name Bluewater) and is dedicated to organic farming and conservation. His tasty vodka now graces the shelves in Washington, as well as Oregon and Kansas, and will be in California soon.

Small batch distilled in copper at 9,300 ft with just a hint of charcoal filtering, it’s a unique flavor lends itself to mixing. We know you are thirsty, so we thought we would share these lovely Bluewater vodka inspired cocktails, created by cocktail writer

The Sally Hemmings Cocktail. Named after Thomas Jefferson’s mistress, Sally Hemmings.  This one is reminiscent of the fire driven spirits that were home-derived from Thomas Jefferson’s still.  An early proponent of craft distillery methods, I can only imagine the addition of Bluewater’s salubrious organic vodka in this little punch.

- In a tumbler glass, rub the inside well with an orange peel to release the oils.
- Add some fresh garden Spearmint and 2 shots of Bluewater Certified Organic Vodka.
- Top with a splash or two of Dark Simple syrup from Martinique and top with freshly made Seltzer water.

Next we have a beer cocktail.  It uses Bluewater Vodka, Moretti La Rosa Amber Beer,  Tomato juice and freshly grated horseradish.  A take-off on the Bloody Mary with the addition of the Italian beer, it makes this cocktail a fizzy, tomato delight.

- 2 ounces of Bluewater Vodka
- 1 ounce freshly squeezed tomato juice
- 1/2 bottle of ”Moretti La Rosa (Amber beer from Italy)
- Fresh horseradish
- Combine ingredients into a shaker with ice, shake and strain over fresh ice with a final scrape of fresh horseradish to finish. Garnish with a lemon hunk.

I like Martinis made from Bluewater Vodka as well.  This one is based loosely on the Aquavit cocktails of the Scandinavian countries.  It involves the use of Caraway seeds.

- Take a bottle of Bluewater Organic Vodka.  Add 1/4 cup of Caraway seeds to the bottle.
- Let sit in a cool dark place for 1 month.  (yes, you can sample for quality control!)
- Prepare a Martini glass for use by chilling it with ice and water, let sit then pour out water/ice.
-  In a cocktail shaker, add fresh ice, 3 oz of the caraway infused Bluewater Organic Vodka.
- Add a few lemon zests, STIR, do not shake to desired coolness.
- STRAIN though a small handheld sieve (to remove any caraway seeds) into an iced Martini glass with exactly two drops of Vya Dry Vermouth.
- Garnish with a lemon zest.
