Avion Tequila
If you’ve been keeping up with HBO’s Entourage, you have undoubtedly heard of Tequila Avion. The tequila has enjoyed a lot of exposure from the series, and it turns out they didn’t even have to pay for it.
See, Kenny Dichter of Avion grew up with Doug Ellin, the creator of the HBO series. They met in elementary school, and have remained friends for the last 35 years. The intended release of Tequila Avion coincided with a situation on the show where one of the characters (Turtle) needed a new business. On the show, his Limo service had failed, and Avion fit the bill for a new profession just perfectly.
The show is a powerful platform, and there has been a big demand for the libation ever since. The buzz around Twitter started as “hey, does this stuff really exist?” and has turned into “where can I get it?!” So we were very excited when we got an opportunity to try it when we can’t (as of right now) get it in Washington State.
We only tried the Blanco, (there is also a reposado and anejo, as with most tequila lines) so we will have to reserve judgment on them for a later date.
Price point wise, it’s on par with Don Julio Blanco, so we used it as a comparison for taste and characteristics. Avion is from the Highlands of Jalisco, and is carbon filtered. It is definitely floral and fruity on the nose, yet comes in a little hot on the mouth and not as peppery as many blancos, it’s a bit more subtle. Compared to the Don Julio, it’s not quite as limey or as smooth, but is certainly sweeter and complex and has distinct citrus overtones.
We are partial to reposados and anejos (depending on the brand) and we would still reach for one of those for a sip on the rocks. Avion Blanco, in our estimation, would be a great mixing tequila for cocktails. As far as the reposado and anejo, we’ll let you know when we try it.
